Meet Sumit Singh, a valued member of the WordPress Community Team! His commitment and valuable contributions to the community are why Pooja Kakkad nominated him for the Yoast Care fund. Let’s learn more about this passionate WordPress enthusiast.

Nominator Pooja Kakkad: “I had the opportunity to meet Sumit in person at WordCamp Ahmedabad 2025. Despite Contribution Day exceeding its capacity, he managed the situation with remarkable professionalism and leadership. He took the initiative to guide new contributors in the main hall, clearly explaining how to begin contributing and making the process approachable for everyone. Sumit’s ability to organize, mentor, and inspire others was truly commendable. Even after the event, he has continued to support and guide me in my contribution journey.

Let’s get to know Sumit Singh

That’s quite an introduction, Pooja! We would love to get to know Sumit even better. That’s why we asked him some questions about his work and his passion for WordPress:

Hi, Sumit! Can you tell us about your journey with WordPress?

My journey with WordPress started more than 12 years ago when I was exploring ways to build websites and learn web development. I come from a small village where resources and opportunities were limited, but I was always curious about technology and how websites work. When I discovered WordPress, it opened a completely new world for me. Not only did it help me learn web development, but it also introduced me to the open-source community. Over time, I started contributing, attending meetups, and connecting with people who were passionate about helping others grow.

Today, I work as a WordPress Project Manager at Intelligent IT Hub Pvt. Ltd., and WordPress remains a major part of my professional and personal life. It’s amazing how a platform that started as a tool for building websites became a gateway to a global community and countless learning opportunities.

What inspired you to contribute to the WordPress community?

At the beginning of my journey, I learned a lot from free tutorials, documentation, and support forums created by the WordPress community. Many people I had never met helped me solve problems and grow my skills. That experience inspired me to give back. I realized that open source thrives because people contribute their time and knowledge to help others. I started by helping users in discussions, joining community events, and gradually getting involved in different contributor teams.

Today, I try to support the community by organizing workshops, mentoring new contributors, and encouraging more people to participate in WordPress. Seeing someone make their first contribution or gain confidence in the community is always very rewarding.

What kind of contributions do you make to the WordPress project?

My contributions focus on both technical and community areas. I’ve contributed to multiple WordPress core releases and participate on teams such as Community, Training, Documentation, Meta, and Polyglots. I also help with translation reviews and support new contributors during contributor days and workshops. One thing I enjoy a lot is guiding people who are contributing to WordPress for the first time and showing them that contributing can be simple and enjoyable.

In addition, I founded the WP Lovers Team, which aims to support WordPress users and developers by sharing knowledge and helping them solve problems. For me, contributing is about building connections and helping the ecosystem grow together.

What impact has WordPress had on your life?

WordPress has completely changed my life. It gave me a career path, confidence, and the opportunity to connect with people from all around the world.

Through WordPress, I’ve had the chance to attend and contribute to WordCamps, organize workshops, mentor contributors, and collaborate with talented people in the open-source ecosystem. These experiences helped me grow not only as a developer but also as a community member.

The most valuable thing WordPress taught me is the power of open source and collaboration-when people share knowledge freely, everyone benefits.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start contributing to WordPress?

My advice would be: don’t wait for the perfect moment-just start. Many people think contributing to WordPress requires advanced coding skills, but that’s not true. You can contribute in many ways, such as translations, documentation, testing, community support, event organization, or participation in discussions.

Start by joining a WordPress meetup or contributor day, ask questions, and connect with other contributors. The community is very welcoming and supportive. Even small contributions matter, and over time they can make a big difference-not only for the project but also for your personal growth.
