Let’s get to know Patrick Lumumba

Thank you for those kind words, Emmanuel! We’ll make sure Patrick gets the appreciation he deserves, so let’s get to know him a bit better by asking a few questions about his work and passion for WordPress

Hi, Patrick! What do you do in the WordPress space?

I wear many hats in the WordPress space. I develop and maintain free plugins, run a WordPress-focused blog, and share tutorials to help others learn and grow. On the community side, I co-organize the Nairobi Meetup, mentor new contributors in the Test Team, and speak at WordCamps to encourage more people to get involved. My passion is using education and contribution to make WordPress more accessible and impactful for others.

How did you first discover WordPress, and why did you start contributing?

I discovered WordPress back in 2012 when I started blogging on WordPress.com. That sparked my interest in building websites, and I taught myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript during my university studies. Later, I moved to WordPress.org, where I freelanced as a web developer and eventually built plugins.

My journey into contributing began with testing WordPress and also helping in the Polyglots and Documentation teams. It evolved into leadership roles, such as Test Lead for WordPress 6.5. I started contributing because I wanted to give back to the platform that has given me so much and shaped my career.

What’s your favorite WordPress memory or something you’re most proud of?

One of my proudest moments was serving as the Test Lead for WordPress 6.5, a major release that reached millions of users worldwide. It was both challenging and rewarding to coordinate testing and ensure quality. This moment actually sparked my interest in pursuing WordPress QA as a career. And now, I work as a QA Engineer at WPMU DEV.

What excites you most about WordPress?

What excites me most about WordPress is its openness and flexibility. It’s a tool that empowers anyone, from bloggers to enterprise developers, to create and share their ideas online.

I also love the community spirit; people from across the world come together to collaborate, contribute, and solve problems. That combination of tech and community is rare, and it keeps me inspired to keep building, learning, and giving back.

Where may people find you? Online, WordCamps, other meetups?

I’m active both online and offline in the WordPress community. People can connect with me through my blog lumumbas.blogGitHub, Twitter/X, and LinkedIn. Offline, I co-organize the Nairobi WordPress Meetup and am part of the organizing team for WordCamp Asia 2026. I’ll also be in Mumbai for WordCamp Asia in 2026, and I regularly attend other WordCamps across East Africa.

Thank you for this interview, Patrick, and for all of your contributions to the WordPress community! Do you know someone like Patrick Lumumba who also deserves to be in the spotlight? Go to our Yoast Care page and nominate them right away.
